When David & Yvonne Peterson of Marquette, Michigan found the perfect piece of land between two lakes, they started to design their weekend retreat large enough to share with their six children and David's Parents.

"Finding someone to turn our plans into reality was another issue," David remembers.

He hunted the country through magazines for a log home builder. After researching building methods and materials, he concluded two things. First, the home would use the Scandinavian hand-scribe method (the so called "cadillac" of log home construction). Second, the contractor would be close to home.

On a chance visit to nearby Iron Mountain, he located Marv Herzog at Country Charm Builders, Inc. Herzog's 34 years of home building experience, paired with his skill for The Chinkless System of shrink to fit notches, qualified him for the job. The deal was set when the Peterson's also learned that Herzog already had Norway logs cut, peeled and dried for two years, and could start immediately.

It took five months to assemble the 3,000 square foot, two story, structure at Herzog's wood lot. Five full log dormers, two second story balconies, one loft and 56 foot log-covered front porch were just some of the challenges Marv faced with the Peterson plan.
"I counted in the Neighborhood of 360 notches with 10 outside corners and full log partitions on that job," Marv chuckles. "I think I went through 37 gallons of bar oil for my chainsaw, too."

Next he re-erected the shell on the Peterson's lot. Scribing stairways, handrails and trim. It's no easy task to frame windows into stacks of 14" x 16" logs, but Marv has an eye for the unique. They shaped these details around the wood's most eye-catching features.

Since 1962, here are what a few customers have said,

During the spring and summer of 1993 your company did the extensive half-log siding on our new home in Florence County, Wisconsin. Working daily, the project took approximately 2 1/2 months to complete. Besides the exterior siding and several interior half log walls there are hundreds of feet of outside and inside log railings. All the work was done to our high expectations and in a timely manner. To this day we are very happy with the half-logs you installed inside and outside of our home.

Sincerely,

-Chuck and Jan Baldridge-

When we decided to build a retirement home in Iron Mountain, Michigan, we were looking for a local builder with log experience. Marvin Herzog came highly recommended.

In the meantime, Mr. Herzog has put up 4 buildings for us. 2 of which are log homes. Having a father and one brother, who are both architects, I had no problems communicating certain design features with Mr. Herzog. Nor did I have any objections to his methods of erecting the buildings.

The few problems we encountered have been addressed promptly and were handled in a professional manner by Mr. Herzog.

I respect his professionalism and intend to use him again as a builder for possible future projects.

Very Truly Yours,

Arnold G. Mueller, P.E.
