Kodiak Log Homes - How It's Done

Handcrafting a log home requires skill, patience, and attention to detail. The steps involved in creating a handcrafted log home are outlined below:

  1. Form a plan: This involves either purchasing a pre-drawn plan or generating a new one that specifically meets your needs. Virtually any floor-plan can be altered to be used in a log home.
  2. Select the type of wood and notching style to be used. Peeling style should also be considered. For examples of peeling and notching styles, link to 'Style Choices'.

  3. Begin the first 'round'. This involves halving every opposing log so that each corner notch can match up the logs being joined. Large openings are left open at this point.

  4. Each log will be scribed at both ends to match the shape of the log being fitted into it at that corner. The logs will then be notched at each end, and have a channel cut the length of the log. The channel serves as means for more tightly fitting the logs together and allows for space to place insulation.

    		5.

  5. Build each of the subsequent 'round'. Rounds will continue until the walls are 9 feet in height (+/-). This will usually take 9 rounds. Windows and doors will be cut from the logs as the structure is being constructed.

  6. 'Curls' will be cut into the ends of the logs, sanded and champhered (notches around end of log), as desired by the customer.

  7. Keyways and window bevels are cut for all door and window openings. Wall slots are cut where requested.
  8. The log roof and beam system, if requested, will be created. Log trusses lend a striking appearance to the vaulted ceiling. Log stairs, ladders, and handrails are built where requested. See 'Feature Options' for more details on these and other features that can be added to your log home.

  9. The finished shell is sanded to remove any rough edges or blemishes.

  10. The entire shell is then disassembled, marked, and loaded for shipping to its final destination.
  11. The shell is reassembled on its foundation at the owners site.
