Few elements of interior design seem to confuse people as much as window treatments, Window treatments fall into two categories: Hard and Soft. Window style, privacy, view, light and décor are issues to address in determining the treatment. The interior designers will go into more detail about hard and soft treatments and fabric selections. In a typical log cabin home of the American pioneer their comfort and beauty was a secondary consideration. Windows were generally covered with greased paper, because no glass was available; shutters were attached with wooden pegs.
FABRICS & LINENS
We can only imagine the early settlers in covered wagons, with wooden trucks holding precious household items and spinning wheels. The spinning wheels were used to make yarn or thread out of available materials, such as cotton and wool. The yarn or thread was required to make fabrics they used for clothing, curtains quilts and other items. The Georgian colonies were urged to produce silk by King James with very little success due to lack of efficient and low-cost-labor to raise Mulberry trees and care for the silkworms. In China the care of the silkworms was just a normal part of the Chinese women's tasks. I guess the silk success in China is due in part to a woman's touch. Today selections are virtually unlimited not only to the natural fibers but man-made Synthetic Fibers as well.
BEDDING
Due to the scarce sewing materials, pioneer women lavished attention and complex designs on their patchwork quilts. Quilting bees were quite common, the neighborhood women would come together sitting and sewing around a quilting frame sharing the latest news. Elaborate quilts were made for wedding gifts and family heirlooms.
