| Timbor® DPT® Industrial Wood Protection
Introduction Timbor® DPT® is highly soluble form of sodium borate which
is EPA registered (EPA Reg. Effectiveness Treatment of logs with Tim-bor® DPT® will prevent infestation by house borers, powder post beetles, termites, and other wood destroying insects. It will also prevent wood degradation due to common wood rotting fungi such as dry, wet and white rots. Tim-bor® DPT® treatment alone is not effective against wood stains such as blue-stain. However, Tim-bor® DPT® is compatible with many sapstain preventive chemicals and often increases their effectiveness. Methods of Application Dip Diffusion The easiest and the least costly method of applying Tim-bor® DPT® to logs is by dip diffusion. The equipment necessary for this process is: 1. A watertight container large enough to completely immerse the logs. 2. A heating system capable of maintaining a solution temperature of
120° F (50° C). Immersion heaters, steam or hot water systems are
suitable and available at many plumbing supply centers.
3. A solution agitation system. An air bubbler consisting of a perforated
pipe on the tank bottom connected to a small air compressor works well.
Solution Maintenance Equipment required: I. A tall glass jar 2. A floating hydrometer (Specific gravity 1.05-1.2) 3. A thermometer (32° - 212° F or O° - I 00° C) Solution samples should be checked daily and after each new mixing. Tim-bor® DPT®, concentrations can easily be checked by taking a sample from the tank and placing it into a tall glass jar, large enough to accommodate a thermometer and hydrometer. The hydrometer should be allowed to float in the Tim-bor® DPT® solution for at least three minutes. The hydrometer reading (specific gravity) is then taken and at the same time the temperature of the sample solution is observed and recorded. Solution concentrations can be calculated from the specific gravity chart. By monitoring the solution density, the amount of Tim-bor® DPT® to be added can be calculated and consistent borate penetration can be achieved in the logs. Structure Maintenance Tim-bor® DPT® treatment is permanent so long as your logs are not exposed to continuous moisture contact. Tim-bor® DPT® treated wood should not be used in soil contact conditions. For exterior logs, it is recommended that a non-filmforming water repellent be applied immediately after construction, then after one heating season and every three years. Breathable water repellents are available from your local distributor or at most lumber supply houses. Safety, Handling and Disposal Tim-bor® DPT® is supplied in 50-pound multi-wall paper bags. It should be stored under dry conditions to prevent caking. While Tim-bor® DPT® requires no special handling, it is recommended that a dust mask and cloth or leather gloves be used while working with the dry powder. Refer to local disposal requirements and regulations for waste disposal methods for Tim-bor® DPT® and contaminated solutions. Tim-bor® DPT® is not listed as a hazardous waste under section 313 of Sara III or RCRA (40 CFR 261.33). For additional information concerning the toxicity and disposal of Tim-bor® DPT®, please refer to the Tim-bor® DPT® Material Safety Data Sheet. Notice: There are no express warranties on Tim-bor® DPT® for the protection of log homes or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose which-extend beyond those specifically described herein, or in seller's specifications, or EPA approved label. Caution: Harmful is swallowed. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid contamination of food and feed. Do not leave container where children or animals may gain access.
